Are there areas in your home that you are not happy with? Rooms that you have been dreaming about changing since the moment you moved in? Are you having a hard time knowing how to plan for a remodel? If so, we want you to know that you are not alone. Everyone has something in their home that they are not happy with and would love to change.
Planning for a remodel can be overwhelming. There are so many aspects to consider and not to mention figuring out a ball park budget. That is why I am happy to help you all out with a step by step guide to help you plan your next remodel.
Step 1 –
Sit down and write out a plan for your remodel. What is it that you want to achieve? What dreams do you have for your home? You will want everything out on paper so that you can clearly state your goals to your contractor (if you are hiring one) and it will also help you to make a proper budget and materials list for your remodel. This is also a great time to take measurements and everything else that you will need. During this process, you will also want to plan out how you will function in your day to day while your remodel is taking place. Especially if it is a regularly used kitchen and/or bathroom space you will be redoing.
Step 2 –
Set a budget for your remodel. Now that you have a full list of what you want you can figure out how much materials will cost. This will also include calling local contractors and getting estimates. Also, don’t forget to include the cost of all permits and any finishing touches you might want, including décor. It is also a good idea to have a cushion in your budget for any unexpected expenses. If it looks like your remodel is out of reach with your finances, then you can go back to step 1 and redraw out some things you might want to change. You can also decide what steps you might want to do yourself vs. what you want to hire out.
Step 3 –
Hire your contractors. For ideas on finding the right contractor check out our post on 5 Easy Steps to Hiring a Handyman. Don’t forget to check out their work, check references, and find out if they are licensed and insured.
Step 4 –
Once you have hired a contractor, you will want to sit down with them and make sure you are both on the same page. Talk to them about what you want, show them your step 1 draft, talk about every detail, including how long the project will last, and how everything will get cleaned up after the project is over. Just remember that no matter how good a contractor is, they can not read minds. Make sure every little detail is talked about so that you both know what you are getting into.
Step 5 –
Have patience and remember that things happen. There are sure to be setbacks, no matter how well you have planned out your budget and your remodel. Just remember that it will all be worth it in the end!
